- In December 2003 I had a total knee replacement. I received the "traditional therapy" of a home program of exercises and out patient physical therapy. My knee flexion and extension improved but due to swelling and pain it was 8 weeks before I could return to work. In April 2010 I had my second total knee replacement. I received cranial sacral work, lymphedema therapy, Kinesio taping and a home program of exercises during my rehabilitation at Special Children Center. It was amazing to see the results. Thanks to the lymphedema techniques, Kinesio taping and Deanna Wanzeks expertise the swelling in my knee was reduced considerably, sometimes 1 to 2 centimeters in a session. This allowed increased movement in my knee and I was able to return to work in six weeks. I have achieved full knee extension and my flexion is consistently improving. The staff and therapy techniques provided at Special Children Center made my rehab a very positive experience. -Vicki June 2010
- Before we came to Special Children Center our twins were doing "ok." We were in our birth to three program and not seeing the results we thought we should be seeing. One of our twins was a shaken baby and the other was neglected. Through AIT (Auditory Integration Therapy) our boys are talking more and better, their behavior is better and they are sleeping better. We found out about Special Children Center through our adoption classes with Lutheran Social Services. What a great referral. We traveled three weeks in a row for intensive therapies. Staying in a hotel with twin 2 and 1/2 year olds was very hard and chaotic but the end results have proved to be worth every minute. Even though we were a long way from home the friendly staff at Special Children Center made my boys and me feel at home. -Melanie July 2010
- When Adrienne was born with Down Syndrome in 2004, we quickly discovered that we needed to find people we could trust to help us through the maze of information, ideas and options available for kids with special needs. The staff at Special Children Center has been helping our family since Adirenne was 2 months old. Just like other kids with Down Syndrome, Adienne needed Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Occupational Therapy to help her walk, talk, eat and do what other kids her age are able to do. Special Children Center has helped Adrienne achieve goals beyond our expectations. Through her participation in weekly therapy activities and intensive sessions, she has been able to do things like dance in a community dance class and recital and will attend our local parochial school next fall as a fully included kindergarten student in a regular classroom. Without Special Children Center, these accomplishments would not have been possible! We are very thankful to have a such a wonderful place in Western Wisconsin.
- Jessica has Downs Syndrome and has gone to Special Children's Center since she was 3 years old. She is going to be 12 this spring and we are still making exciting progress. Jessica struggles with vocalizations, speech, language and communication. We have worked with Total Communication to give her every opportunity to express herself. Her speech therapists most recently have been working with the PROMPT method to give her cues to remind her what she needs to do to achieve her vocalization goals. We are grateful that her therapists keep trying new things as we help Jessica reach her greatest potential. Thru both physical and occupational therapies Jessica has gained muscle control, strength, stability, organization and fine motor skills. She has done the TheraSuit Intensive program, Auditory Integration Therapy, and music therapy all of which have greatly contributed to her development. The exceptional therapists at SCC have a wealth of knowledge in a wide range of traditonal and non-traditional disciplines to incorporate into each child's program. The result is all the pieces of the complex puzzle come together and treat the whole child. -Linda
- "My name is Andrew Brenes. I am 22 years old and I was born with cerebral palsy. I have always searched for ways to increase my mobility and physical fitness, and it is through Special Children's that I have been able to improve and maintain my physical abilities as well as my mental state. Through Special Children's innovative techniques, well-trained staff committed to empowering people with disabilities, and hard work, I have been able to continue to improve my walking gait and balance. When I was 16, I began a series of operations to rotate the bones in my legs so that I could continue to walk independently. The operations caused me to loose a great deal of strength. Since then, I have been working in the "Spider Cage" with staff at Special Children's and have experienced incredible results! Thank you Special Children's for your commitment and ingenuity in helping me and many others to improve my mobility, independence, and quality of life." -Andrew
- "The visit to the Special Children Center was wonderful. Just what we have been looking for. Sally, the speech therapist that we met with was fantastic. We also got a brief minute with Nancy. Our daughter, Ebonne, felt that Sally helped her. We did too. It was about going back to some of the organizing techniques that we used for her earlier, and we also learned some NEW ones. I wish we lived closer. You could see the difference the session made for Ebonne immediately! We are excited." - Phyllis and Zachary

- "My daughter Emily has just completed a modified TheraSuit Intensive. This program helped her to gain better head control and use her eyes a lot more. Emily has been diagnosed with intractable multifocal complex partial seizures that are not controlled with medication. As a result of this, she is developmentally delayed and also has hypotonia. The TheraSuit has been a great thing for Emily allowing her muscles to realize that they need to kick in and work together. After Emily completed her two weeks in the TheraSuit her overall muscle tone seemed to improve. She went from feeling pretty floppy to feeling more solid when being carried around. She is also making all sorts of very cool new vocalizations. At almost 2 years old, Emily does not yet talk, so this is a major improvement too. Emily's organization also seems to have been affected in a positive way from the TheraSuit Intensive program. Emily also has benefited from the Cranial Sacral work performed by some of the therapist at the SCC. It has actually helped control some of the tonic seizures that we have not been able to control with medication. Amazing! Emily has only been a client of the SCC since June/July of 2006. In these last seven plus months Emily has made more strides forward in her development than she had in the thirteen months that we have been working with her at home. The SCC provides Emily with the stimulation and sensory input that I was just not able to provide at home. We love the SCC and refer everyone that we know to take their children there for therapy." -Kristy
